PROGRAM COORDINATOR/ASSISTANT COACH

Hourly wage rate:   $17.55/ hr            

Duration:  217.5 hours

(hours per week fluctuate)

  • Must be able to swim

  • Must possess a valid Pleasure Craft Operator card

  • Must have previous rowing experience

  • The position is geared to a student interested in pursuing a sports-related career or majoring in kinesiology or outdoor recreation

  • Must be available to travel to out-of-town regattas (Travel expenses will be reimbursed.)

    The successful candidate will help the Thunder Bay Rowing Club deliver its spring and summer rowing programs.  The student will be expected to be on site when rowing programs are in progress 3 - 4 evenings per week and 6 mornings per week. 

Details:

The Student’s duties will include helping deliver Learn-to-Row, novice, recreational and competitive rowing programs. The Student will be in charge of coordinating information between coaches, participants, parents and the general public; and will liaise with and assist a mentoring coach in organizing each day's workout. As the summer progresses, the Student will be given more freedom to design and organize these workouts.  The Student will follow rowers in a safety boat and occasionally video the rowing for later analysis and feedback to athletes. 

The Student will help organize the Thunder Bay Sprints Regatta and help prepare athletes for out-of-town regattas.  Such duties may include preparing information packages, registering athletes on-line, assisting & organising rowers during the regatta, and preparing media releases before and after the event.

 Duties may also include helping organize and time informal club races.

 Safety measures will be part of the student’s duties.  As part of every rowing practice, the student will:

  • before going on-water, check weather forecast and help plan practice accordingly

  • do safety equipment checks on all rowing shells and coach boat

  • ensure all rowing shells are signed out

  • on-water, monitor rowers, weather conditions and water conditions

  • where possible, remove floating debris and other hazards from the river

  • immoveable hazards and make rowers aware of their location

  • ensue proper sign-in of all rowing shells

 The student will receive Safe Sport Training, on-the job training, including motor-boat operation, and mentoring geared to his/her level of proficiency.

 From the mentoring coaches, the Student will learn a variety of coaching techniques and approaches applicable to rowers across a wide range of ages and capabilities.  It is hoped the student will develop an understanding of the movement principals behind various drills, develop observational skills, and contribute to the coaching team whose aim is to help rowers improve their skills and their enjoyment of the sport.

 As Program Coordinator, the student will use spreadsheets and a variety of on-line tools and communicate with rowers, parents and the public

The student will receive training and orientation before starting the job.
